KYNNECTIONS

This project, which is funded by the Federal Government, is well under way, with the first round-table discussion to take place on 27 February 2013. The underlying aim is to develop an African-Muslim leadership base among young people, and the project will take the form of 4 round-table discussions, involving 60 young people (aged 16 – 18) from the African-Muslim, Christian and Jewish communities. Three Jewish Day Schools are participating and the project is gathering momentum.

ANGLICAN-JEWISH FRIENDSHIP DINNER

The dinner, which is an important annual function in promoting our interfaith activities, was held late last year, and was a success both in terms of numbers attending and quality of guest speakers, who were Dr Andreas Loewe, Dean of Melbourne and Rabbi Avrohom Jacks, Chief Minister of the Melbourne Hebrew Congregation.

MT. SCOPUS MEMORIAL COLLEGE KEHILATI CONFERENCE

The conference is designed to introduce Year 11 students to a broad range of topics, covering both the Jewish and wider community. I was asked to speak on “Leadership, Community and Identity”. The students were engaged and keen to participate, and showed a strong understanding of the issues.

CHILD PROTECTION POLICY

The JCCV Child Protection Steering Committee is planning its program of outreach into the community to assist organisations with putting in place policies and procedures in relation to child abuse and to help  the community to have a better understanding of the issues and how best to address these.

YOM HASHOA COMMEMORATION

The Yom Hashoa Commemoration evening will take place on Thursday 4 April 2013 and the Hazkara at Carlton Cemetery will be in the afternoon on Yom Hashoah, which is on Sunday 7 April 2013.

I cannot stress strongly enough the importance to our community of commemoration, and would ask you and your members to make every effort to attend at least one of these events.

JCCV ONLINE COMMUNAL CALENDAR

The JCCV interactive online calendar is being finalised, ready to launch. It is already operational and being used by affiliates to enter their functions and events. The calendar can be synchronized to upload events and festivals onto personal computers and will greatly facilitate the functionality of the communal calendar.

JEWISH MUSEUM

Last year JCCV and the Museum received some complaints in relation to three videos which formed part of the “Calling Australia Home” exhibition. I had a very productive meeting with the Director of the Museum, Rebecca Forgasz, during which she briefed me on proposed changes to the exhibition, and these have now been implemented.

COUNCIL OF PRESIDENTS

The Council of Presidents meetings will continue this year, with the first meeting scheduled for 10 April 2013. At the request of those who attended the last meeting, a briefing paper setting out the issues to be discussed will be sent out well before the meeting date.

PLENUM MEETINGS

In order for affiliates to have a better understanding of each other’s activities, three JCCV Plenum meetings this year will be hosted by affiliates at their premises as follows:

  • Jewish Holocaust Centre –  6 May 2013
  • Jewish Museum of Australia – 3 June 2013
  • National Council of Jewish Women of Australia (Victorian Section)  – 5 August 2013
