Chanukah Night 1 (Dedication 1)

21 December 2011

Kislev 25 - CHANUKAH is one of the festive holidays. Gifts are given to children at candle lighting time. Traditional food is Latkes (Potato pancakes) and a traditional game is Dreidle (Tops). The letters on the four sided Dreidle are N.G.H.S. which means Nes Gadol Hayah Sham (A great miracle happened there).

The rededication of the Temple in 165 B.C.E. by Judah Maccabee, three years after its desecration by the Syrians, institutes the Eight Day Festival of Hanukah. Tradition relates that Judah could onlyfind uncontaminated oil for relighting the MENORA sufficient for one day. A miracle happened and the oilburned for eight days. Hence on the eight day holiday, candles are lit one on the first night, two on the second night, and so on until eight are lit on the last night. CHANUKAH is one of the festive holidays.
