Jewish Organisations Join Forces to Prevent Child Abuse

25 July 2013

The Jewish Community Council of Victoria (JCCV), in conjunction with the Australian Zionist Youth Council, Chabad Youth and Jewish Care, have joined forces to provide a free information session for community organisations to prevent and respond effectively to allegations of child abuse.

The initiative, the latest step by the JCCV's Child Protection Reference Group, is designed to reach all Jewish organisations working with children, whether as core business or where incidental to their operations.  This includes schools, shules, sporting clubs, youth groups and cultural organisations.

The seminar, to be conducted by the highly respected Australian Childhood Foundation, will give organisations practical tips about designing the right policies and procedures to prevent abuse and ensure that all allegations of abuse are dealt with appropriately.

Reuben Bolaffi Chairperson of the Australian Zionist Youth Council and Moshe Kahn, Director of Chabad Youth will also be assisting in delivery of the session.

JCCV President Nina Bassat said the JCCV's Child Protection Reference Group had been established to offer practical support for communal organisations, to protect children and help community organisations ensure risk management policies and procedures are in place.

Bassat said, "This is an excellent opportunity for communal organisations to obtain direct access to free advice from the best in the business.  When one considers the damage caused by child sexual abuse, our question to communal organisations is 'for the sake of our children and for the sake of your organisation, can you afford not to attend this seminar?’.

The JCCV Safeguarding Children session will be held at 8:30am-10:00am on Tuesday 20th August in the Harris Room, Education Centre, Jewish Care, 619 St Kilda Road.  Bookings essential at
