Child Protection Features at JCCV AGM

27 November 2013

At the Jewish Community Council of Victoria (JCCV) Annual General Meeting on Monday night, Frank McGuire MP, Deputy Chair of the Victorian ‘Inquiry into the Handling of Child Abuse by Religious and Other Non Government Organisations’ spoke passionately about the investigations undertaken by the Inquiry, the harrowing evidence submitted and the recommendations agreed with bipartisan support from the Committee members.

Mr McGuire said that the Premier and Leader of the Opposition were both committed to passing the necessary legislation to implement the Inquiry recommendation as soon as possible.  He also thanked the Jewish community for its participation in the Inquiry and thanked victims for having the courage to come forward and give evidence.

Nina Bassat AM, President of the JCCV praised Mr McGuire and the Inquiry for undertaking its work effectively, professionally and respectfully while allowing victims to come forward and transfer the feelings of guilt back to the perpetrators.  Jennifer Huppert, Vice President of the JCCV, John Searle, Immediate Past President of the JCCV and Manny Waks, CEO of Tzedek all praised the Inquiry and its recommendations for reform.

Other speakers at the AGM included:

  • Anton Hermann on the JCCV Child Protection Working Group and the community organisation training program planned for 2014,
  • David Rifkin on the JCCV young adult community leaders Connects program which was starting to help with collaboration and innovation amongst young community leaders,
  • Sally Goldner on the JCCV’s GLBTI Reference Group, its very successful No To Homophobia campaign and its planned video campaign, and
  • Debbie Zauder on the JCCV’s Youth Alcohol Program which has run programs and developed materials for parents and Jewish school students.

Nina Bassat thanked the JCCV affiliate presidents, delegates and guests present for their support throughout the year.  In particular Mrs Bassat praised the Parliamentary Friends of Israel, headed by David Southwick MP and Marsha Thomson MP for their terrific support for Israel and partnership with the local Jewish community.
