JCCV Welcomes Polish Ambassador

09 April 2014

At the April Plenum of the Jewish Community Council of Victoria (JCCV), the Polish Ambassador, HE Pawel Milewski was keynote speaker addressing an audience of over 70 leaders from the Jewish and Polish communities at the Beth Weizmann Community Centre.

Guests from the Polish community included Dr George Luk, Hon. Consul General for the Republic of Poland and leaders from the Polish Community Council of Victoria, the Polish Community Council of Australia, the Eastern Districts Polish Association and the Australian Institute of Polish Affairs.  Bernard Korbman, President of the Australian Society of Polish Jews and Their Descendants (ASPJD) and the ASPJD Board also attended.  ASPJD Vice President Izydor Marmur introduced the Ambassador.

The Ambassador, who was celebrating his first anniversary in the role, spoke about modern Polish history, the important one thousand year history of the Jewish community in Poland and the new Museum of the History of Polish Jews which opened in Warsaw a year ago.  He also highlighted the important role Jews had played in the modern history of Poland and the Jewish contribution to Polish culture.

“Poland is proud of its Jewish community,” he said.

The Ambassador advised that the Museum had opened with a full exhibition with eight galleries, thanks to generous donors from around the world.  Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Julie Bishop had visited the Museum on her recent visit to Poland.

Nina Bassat AM, President of the JCCV moderated question time with the Ambassador which raised important questions from the audience around the banning of ritual slaughter in Poland and the issue of restitution payments for Jewish communal property and private Jewish property.  The Ambassador was hopeful that the ritual slaughter issue would be settled positively through the Polish Constitutional Court as an issue of freedom of religious practice.
