The Jewish community of Victoria joins the entire Jewish world in mourning the loss of Eyal Yifrach, Gil-Ad Shaar and Naftali Frenkel. We grieve with their families, we grieve with the people of Israel; we grieve with the Jews in New York and New Jersey, in Istanbul, Paris and Warsaw, and in every town where Jews are to be found.

That which we most feared has happened and we all share feelings of devastation and grief.

These were not just three kidnapped Israeli teenagers. These boys were Eyal, Gil-Ad and Naftali; a 19 year old and two 16 tear-old boys, who were sons and brothers; grandsons and nephews, and friends. They played tennis and basketball, they worked as counsellors, they baked muffins; and they should have been home for Shabbat.

We cannot comprehend the pain which the families of Eyal, Gil-Ad and Naftali are feeling. All we can do is tender to them our condolences and our heartfelt prayers that the outpouring of support from Jews worldwide will offer them a measure of comfort.

We speak of peace and we dream of peace; but peace will only be possible when the rest of the world understands that kidnapping and murdering innocent young boys is not the path to peace.  Peace will only be possible when the rest of the world not only speaks out, but also takes a stand against terrorism.

The search for the boys was called Operation Brother's Keeper, a poignant reminder that each one of us is indeed our brother’s keeper. For no matter what horrors are perpetrated against our people and no matter where they occur, it is as if the outrage has been perpetrated against every one of us. That is the strength of our people – we value each life as if it were that of our brother. What is done to one of us, is done to all.

Eyal, Gil-Ad and Naftali - may your memory be a blessing.
