Babi Yar Commemoration

A service to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the massacre at Babi Yar was held on 25 September 2016 at the Jewish Holocaust Centre.  Guests at the event, jointly organized by JCCV, Jewish Holocaust Centre, Kangarusski, Form of Russian Speaking Jewry, Russian Sunday School LIDER and Association of Former Inmates of Nazi Concentration Camps and Ghettoes from the FSU, included members of the Victorian Parliament, VicPol Deputy Commissioner Andrew Crisp, VMC Commissioner Sam Alamliki and ICV President Bayram Aktepe.

Mental Health Forum

On 11 September JCCV hosted a  Menal Health Forum aiming to help open the discussion on mental health issues across the community.  Minister for Mental Health and Equality, Martin Foley and Bram Presser opened the Forum and the Minister outlined the Victorian Government’s mental health policy and initiatives to reduce the rate of suicide in Victoria.  Speakers at the Forum included mental health advocate Steve Bedwell, CEO of SANE Australia Jack Heath, Manager Individual & Family Services at Jewish Care Marilyn Kraner, Psychiatrist Dr George Halasz, and Psychologist Nathan Kotler.

Meeting with Ben Carroll MP

At the August Plenum I reported that David Marlow, Ricky Pearl and I met with Ben Carroll MP, the Parliamentary Secretary for Justice and Josh Burns to discuss the community’s requests for financial assistance with provision of security.  On 23 September they paid a follow up visit to a number of community organisations, including Temple Beth Israel and Yeshivah Beth Rivkeh, to review their security concerns.

Spiritual Care

On 8 September JCCV once again hosted the annual Spiritual Health Care Jewish Immersion Day.  The program, which is part a part of a spiritual care subject offered by Stirling College and the University of Divinity, is aimed at creating better understanding of the Jewish community and the needs of Jewish patients for spiritual care professionals in hospitals around Victoria.

Fifteen spiritual carers from various religious faiths and hospitals heard from a wide variety of speakers and had a rich immersion into Jewish history, tradition and explanation of Jewish pastoral needs.

Youth Alcohol Project

Since the last plenum Anat Aloni has organized events for students and parents at Bialik College, Mt Scopus Memorial College and Shalom Aleichem School.  These sessions have been well received, and will like to record my thanks to the volunteers who participated in them.

Professional Development

Management Consultant and genius trainer Adam Slonim presented a fourth Emotional Intelligence seminar for the JCCV with participants from over a dozen community organisations, including Synagogues, Zionist organisations and community service providers. The session, held on 18 August, was aimed at helping the participants “Keep Their Cool”.

Community events

Atida Lipshutz and David Marlow represented JCCV at the annual Shmooze with the Blues lunch on 30 August, which was organized by CSG.  Attended by over 100 members of Victoria Police, the event is aimed at celebrating and strengthening ties beween CSG and Victoria Police.

On 18 September I attended the Finals Concert of the B’nai B’rith Victoria Jewish Youth Music Eisteddford, which show cased some of the amazing talent in our community.
