WE ARE VICTORIAN. AND PROUD OF IT.
20 February 2017
An open letter to you, our fellow Victorians.
In this great state of ours, we come from all sorts of backgrounds, cultures and beliefs. We must ensure that we treat others with respect. And that all voices are heard and considered.
This diversity enriches us. It has made us who we are.
But it doesn't come without challenges.
The world we live in is ever-changing. Right now, the threat of extremist violence and terrorism, whatever its source, is making it easy for fear, hatred and bigotry to take hold. It makes it easy for us to forget that we are above all, a community.
It's time for us to come together. To raise our voice and talk about the things that bind us rather than divide us.
As Victorians, there are values we all share that are non-negotiable.
Like, the right to a fair go. That discrimination is never OK. That you should be free to be yourself. That we should all abide by the same laws. That we have much to gain from interfaith and intercultural dialogue. And from working together to deal with common challenges.
It's up to all of us to contribute and belong.
We the undersigned call upon our fellow Victorians from all backgrounds to come together around the shared values we hold dear.
