JCCV & ADC Collaborate on Multicultural Policy

23 November 2009

The Jewish Community Council of Victoria and the B’nai B’rith Anti‐Defamation Commission have again collaborated on a submission to Government, their fourth joint submission in the past eighteen months.

The Jewish Community Council of Victoria and the B’nai B’rith Anti‐Defamation Commission have again collaborated on a submission to Government, their fourth joint submission in the past eighteen months.

JCCV president John Searle stated today:

“One of my stated objectives on assuming the presidency of the JCCV was to avoid duplication wherever possible. The JCCV has gone about this in a number of ways, including forming appropriate partnerships to provide policy input and to obtain project funding. Due to the similarity of our views, this particular submission to the Australian Government (via the Australian Multicultural Advisory Council) on the development of a new federal cultural diversity policy provided a perfect opportunity to work together with the ADC once more.

Both of our organisations are agreed that multiculturalism is a policy that has served Australians extremely well, including the members of the Jewish community.

Certainly we acknowledge that multiculturalism has not been without its difficulties, to a large extent due to the rapidity of demographic change, and our paper recognises that the cohesiveness of our society has at times consequently been strained. We warn of the need to strike a judicious balance between social cohesion and acceptance of difference and note that the best way to achieve this is mobilising all Australians to work together for the common good.

We are hopeful that a combination of good will and considered planning will overcome any difficulties and result in a society that is already well placed to provide a shining example of cooperation to other nations around the world.”
