President's Report

01 June 2015

A GLBTI Youth Reference Group has been established to progress the video project which funded by the HEY Grant.  The Group plans to hold a student video competition, and will be inviting entries from both secondary and tertiary students.  Planning is continuing for the GLBTI Forum, which will be held at 6.30 on Sunday 23 August.

Yom Ha’atzmaut Cocktail Reception

The Yom Ha’atzmaut Cocktail Reception for politicians and community leaders will be held on 10 June.  The Reception will once again be held at the Windsor Hotel, and is being supported by the Government.

Multicultural and Interfaith

JCCV today co-hosted the Jewish Christian Muslim Association (JCMA) community forum on Social Cohesion, which was held on 31 May.   Speakers included the Honourable Robin Scott, Minister for Multicultural Affairs, Bishop Philip Huggins, JCMA President, Sir James Gobbo, JCMA Patron and Prof Gary Bouma, keynote speaker. Francis Prince and David Marlow represented JCCV and Rabbi Shamir Caplan, and Dr Helen Light, former JCCV Vice President, also attended. Nearly 100 people from the Jewish, Muslim and Christian communities, including AFL Ambassadors, clergy, police and youth leaders.  The nearly 100 participants heard about multiculturalism and social inclusion from the speakers and then workshopped actions to improve and enhance Victoria's social cohesion.

The Jewish Catholic Friendship dinner will be on Sunday 14 June, and I urge you all to attend.  This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council’s Declaration, Nostra Aetate, which will be the topic for the evening.

JCCV will be hosting a Multifaith Leadership Conference on Sunday 9 August at Beth Weizmann.  Speakers include Minister Scott, and Professor Leon Mann.  We anticipate that members of more than 12 different communities will attend.  This will be followed by a workshop on Governance, to be held on Wednesday 12 August. This will be similar to the Governance workshop JCCV held earlier this year, and an opportunity for those affiliates who weren’t able to make the previous workshop to attend.

I also wish to give advance notice of a Jewish community forum on Constitutional Recognition of Australia’s Indigenous People which will be held at 7.30pm on 11 October 2015.  I will provide more information at future Plenums but ask that you put this date in your diaries.

With resignation of Simon Glynn as Executive Director, there have been some structural changes at CSG.  The role of Executive Director has been replaced by two positions, Chief Executive Office and Chief Operating Officer.  Ricky Pearl has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer.  He will be taking up the role in early August, and he will be invited to speak at a Plenum later in the year.  Justin Lipson has been project to the role of Chief Operating Officer.

YAP held the first Parent Network Project for the year for Mt Scopus parents.  It was a successful evening, attended by over 45 year 7 parents, who heard presentations by Ruth Casen, a family therapist, and Ronit Lewis, Hatzolah education officer.  Debbie Zauder and the YAP committee is planning similar events for parents of other Jewish schools.

B’nai B’rith Victoria 70th Anniversary

I attended the celebration of B’nai B’rith Victoria’s 70 anniversary, held at Glen Eira Town Hall on 31 May.  The speakers acknowledged the organisations role in building a cohesive Jewish community in post war Melbourne, and the inclusive nature of the organisation.  My congratulations to B’nai B’rith on this wonderful achievement, and for the role it has played in Victorian, and Australian, community since its establishment.
