AUJS and Community Leadership Share Pizza

05 September 2011

Leaders from the Australasian Union of Jewish Students (AUJS), the Jewish Community Council of Victoria (JCCV) and the Zionist Council of Victoria (ZCV) gathered together on Wednesday night to share pizza and discuss how the community’s leadership could better support AUJS on campus.

The event was organised by the JCCV and the ZCV in recognition of the fact that there has not in the past been sufficient collaboration between the Jewish community’s general leadership and our leadership on campus.

“The event was a wonderful opportunity for us to get to know each other in an informal manner, and for the JCCV and the ZCV to learn more about the issues our students are facing on Melbourne campuses,” said ZCV President Sam Tatarka.

John Searle, President of the JCCV, added: “It was truly inspiring to discover that we have such a talented group of young people leading our youth on campus, and strongly encourage each and every one of them to continue their involvement in the community after graduating”.

AUJS Victoria President Dana Harel updated attendees on recent AUJS initiatives on the various campuses, including the very successful ‘Save a Child’s Heart’ events currently taking place.

In an email the following day, Harel said she had received a lot of positive feedback about the event. “I think it will lead to the formation of even stronger relationships between the JCCV, ZCV and AUJS executives. I feel that most people would feel comfortable calling to get advice, and would really appreciate the opportunity to do so, to know that there are others who feel as passionately as we do, and are willing to help out in any way that they can,” she wrote.

Other issues discussed included the BDS campaign, the upcoming AUJS ball, anti-Semitism and racial vilification on campus, and practical ways in which the JCCV and ZCV could provide support to AUJS.
