Donations Now Tax Deductible

26 June 2008

Donations for Jewish community security no tax-deductible.

Anton Block, president of the Jewish Community Council of Victoria, the peak body of Victorian Jewry, said today:

“I am delighted to announce that Parliament has passed legislation enabling the Council for Jewish Community Security, which the JCCV will administer in Victoria, to be listed as a deductible gift recipient under the Income Tax Assessment Act. This will mean that the costs of communal security, regardless of the venue, will receive Commonwealth Government support via the tax system.

It is a dreadful fact of life that there are elements in our society who advocate hatred of Jews and of Israel. Of even more concern, there are others who are prepared to go further. As a consequence the Jewish community faces a security threat far greater than that confronted by most Australians.

There is no more troubling reminder of the dangers facing our community than the sight of security guards protecting Jewish communal institutions such as schools and synagogues. Jewish communal leaders consequently had sought this legislative change for a considerable period of time. While it will not eliminate the threats that continue to confront us, at least the provision of tax relief for donations for communal security will help to resource the means for facing them.”
