YAPping Out Loud

YAPping Out Loud

10 November 2011

The Jewish Community Council of Victoria (JCCV) has been YAPping out loud and clear in the last few months. Debbie Zauder, Project Manager states that the reason for all the YAPping is the success of the Youth Alcohol Project (fondly referred to as YAP!!)

An important feature of the YAP is the Drama Workshops. The Drama Workshop's main aim is to address the issue of alcohol abuse by incorporating interactive methods through drama.

The Drama Workshops have been created by Elinor Zetlin, the Creative Director of Shine Brightly Speech & Drama. The Drama Workshops aim to engage students through interactive, entertaining and educational activities and games. The goals are to ensure students know where to find help and make them comfortable to ask for help. The Workshops provide students with the confidence to stand up against peer pressure to drink and encourages students to do what’s best for them, to look out for their friends and to help other under age children say no to drinking.

The responses from the students have been very positive and well received. The feedback has been that the workshops are fun and that using drama games and activities are a great way to address the topic of under-age drinking plus students and their teachers have a chance to engage, learn something and share their thoughts and ideas in a relaxed and informal atmosphere.

A few of the comments from the students include, “I liked doing this workshop, it was fun!” “It was great to do drama and learn something too” “The scenarios were interesting and real”

The Drama Workshops are important for the Jewish Community as a whole, as they help address the issue of under-age drinking in a fun, interactive, safe and interesting way. The program is highly relevant and is adaptable to the level of understanding of the students and enables all students to be involved and share their thoughts.
