Movies, Alcohol & Binge Drinking

19 April 2012

Link between exposure to alcohol consumption in movies and youth binge drinking.

A new study in the journal Pediatrics has found evidence of a link between exposure to alcohol consumption in movies and youth binge drinking. The study took place across Germany, Iceland, Italy, Netherlands, Poland and Scotland.

Other key findings include:

- The relationship was not influenced by those countries’ cultural differences; rather this link was found in all countries.

- The relationship between film depiction and adolescent behaviour was true for alcohol  consumption but not for smoking tobacco.

- The results suggest that if steps were taken to reduce exposure to movie depictions of alcohol, then fewer young people would take up binge drinking.
